BOC Comments on Proposed Medicare Rule Excluding ATs from Offering Certain Orthotics Services

The Board of Certification, Inc., today posted a public comment regarding the definition of individuals who are qualified to provide certain orthotics services under a newly proposed Medicare rule.

The proposed rule limits the healthcare professionals who can provide custom-fitting orthotics services to physicians, treating practitioners, occupational therapists and physical therapists. The BOC believes that Athletic Trainers have mistakenly been omitted from this list – despite having the qualifications set forth by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Other organizations have also submitted public comments on the proposed rule, including the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) and the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).
