BOC Exam Application—Four Tips to Avoid Bench Time

Nothing is more disappointing than watching a basketball player make a critical error that costs the game. The same applies when a BOC exam candidate makes a mistake during the BOC exam application process. Failure to complete the BOC exam application process correctly can significantly delay becoming a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer. To avoid time on the bench, candidates should apply the four tips below to take their application process from air ball to slam-dunk.

Tip 1: Use Legal Name – Not Nickname or Shortened Name

Candidates are required to enter their legal first, last name and suffix as it appears on a valid, government-issued photo ID (i.e., driver’s license, passport, state-issued ID) when creating their profile on BOC Central™. The use of incorrect legal name is one of the most common errors.

On exam day, candidates must present both their government-issued photo ID and exam admission ticket that is generated from their BOC Central profile. Their legal first, last name and suffix as it appears on a valid, government-issued photo ID must match the name reflected on the exam admission ticket. If candidates use a nickname or shortened name, the candidate will not be admitted into the exam.Candidates who have a change of name (e.g.; marriage, divorce, second last name, suffix) are required to notify the BOC by logging into BOC Central and completing “AT401 - Name Change Request” form.

Legal first, last name and suffix exactly as it appears on their valid government-issued photo ID (acceptable IDs include driver’s licenses, passports and state-issued IDs). School IDs will not be accepted.

Candidates who have a change of name (e.g.; marriage, divorce, second last name, suffix) are required to notify the BOC by logging into BOC Central and completing “AT401 - Name Change Request” form.

Tip 2: Complete BOC Exam Application in Two Steps

There are two steps to complete the BOC exam application. Candidates often complete “AT101 - Exam Application - Step 1” but miss completing “AT102 - Exam Application - Step 2” by the exam application deadline. We breakdown the process below.

Complete “AT101 - Exam Application - Step 1”

  • Candidate completes and submits form
  • Program director or ARTI confirms eligibility
  • Candidate is notified of form status via email

Please note: If it is getting close to the exam application deadline date and the candidate has not yet received an email from the BOC indicating “AT101 - Exam Application - Step 1” of the application has been approved, the candidate should contact the appropriate person (i.e. program director or ARTI) and remind them of the upcoming application deadline. Meeting exam deadlines is the candidate’s responsibility.

Complete “AT102 - Exam Application - Step 2”

  • Candidate answers affidavit questions
  • Documentation will be required if candidate has a legal or academic discipline case
  • Candidate pays non-refundable application fee and submits form
  • Candidate receives a confirmation email letting them know their application has been submitted for review

Please note: Applications received by 5 p.m. CT on the application deadline date are processed within two business days for the current exam window. After the BOC processes applications, the candidate will receive an email from boccentral@bocatc.org with the application status.

Tip 3: Renew NATA Membership to Receive a Discounted Application Fee

The BOC does offer an exam application fee discount to National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) members. However, many candidates forget to renew their NATA membership before applying for the BOC exam. Candidates should make sure their NATA membership is current before applying for the BOC exam to take advantage of the discount.

Tip 4: Utilize the “BOC Certification Exam Candidate Handbook”

As the number one resource for information about the BOC exam, the “BOC Certification Exam Candidate Handbook” is an important resource for candidates. This document provides step-by-step information that will help guide candidates through the entire BOC exam process. During the application and registration process, students are even asked to attest to reading and understanding the information within the “BOC Certification Exam Candidate Handbook.” Don’t forget this essential resource and refer to this document for more information about the BOC exam.
