FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Omaha, NE, Oct. 4, 2019 – On Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019, the Board of Certification (BOC) received written confirmation from the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) declaring an early exit to the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with the Board of Certification (BOC) and Athletic Rehabilitation Therapy Ireland (ARTI). The MRA was developed between CATA and BOC in 2005, with ARTI joining the agreement in 2014. This agreement allows CATA Certified Athletic Therapists, BOC Certified Athletic Trainers and ARTI Certified Athletic Therapists the opportunity to take each other’s certification exams, thereby removing barriers for certified professionals to possibly obtain employment in another jurisdiction.

The MRA in its current form was set to expire on Dec. 31, 2020. Per the memorandum of understanding between the organizations, there must be a 60-day notice provided for termination. As a result, the CATA will no longer be a member of the MRA as of November 29th, 2019. However, the MRA between the BOC and ARTI will remain in effect. The BOC is working diligently to accommodate all of the CATA and BOC candidates who are in the process of becoming BOC or CATA certified, or who have begun the application process. The BOC and ARTI remain committed to the MRA for the remainder of 2019 and 2020. The BOC and ARTI will continue its partnership into the future, promoting the athletic training and therapy (ATT) profession, while seeking new opportunities for the profession worldwide.

For CAT(C) credential holders currently planning to sit for the BOC exam, steps one and two of the application process must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. CST, Friday, Nov. 29, 2019, in order to be eligible to sit for the BOC exam. Similarly, for BOC Certified Athletic Trainers currently planning to sit for the CATA exam, the application must be approved by Nov. 29, 2019, in order to be eligible. Candidates who are currently eligible to take either exam will remain eligible until their application expires as outlined by each organization. Questions should be directed to the respective organization.

The BOC, a national credentialing agency, has been certifying Athletic Trainers and identifying for the public, quality health care professionals with certainty since 1969. More than 57,000 individuals currently hold the ATC® credential worldwide. The BOC is headquartered at 1415 Harney St., Suite 200, Omaha, Nebraska 68102. For more information, call (877) 262-3926.
