In-Depth Look: Volunteer for the Continued Professional Development Working Group and MOC Task Force

In honor of National Volunteer Month, we are featuring BOC volunteers who serve as BOC board members, committee, task force and work group members and exam item writers. The BOC would like to thank all of our BOC volunteers for their hard work and dedication to the athletic training profession. The BOC welcomes volunteers from a variety of backgrounds. Gail Samdperil, EdD, ATC is the Associate Dean, College of Health Professions at Sacred Heart University and Clinical Associate Professor for the Athletic Training Program. Samdperil has been practicing as an Athletic trainer (AT) for approximately 33 years.

1. Describe your setting:

I teach in an undergraduate athletic training program which will be transitioning to a master’s program in May 2018.

2. Name the group(s) you participate in as a BOC volunteer and how long you’ve participated.

2015 - present: Invited Member, Maintenance of Competence (MOC) task force, appointed November 2015

2011 - present: Chair, Continued Professional Development Working Group

2007- 2012: Member, Task Force on Continuing Professional Education

1997 - 2005: Member, Role Delineation and Research Committee

1996 - 1997: Test development workshop

1995 - 2000: Test Site Administrator for Certification Exam

1988 - 1994: Certification Examiner, NATA-BOC Certification Exam/BOC Certification Exam

3. What is the best or most rewarding part about volunteering with the BOC?

The best part of volunteering for the BOC is collaborating with other ATs. for the betterment of the profession.

4. How has your experience volunteering at the BOC influenced you?

Over the years, I recognize the need to give back to the profession of athletic training.

5. What advice would you give to an AT looking to get involved as a BOC volunteer?

Offer your time to serve the BOC at various points in your career. You will find serving the BOC is a rewarding experience.
