The BOC is pleased to announce the appointment of James Christopher (Chris) Ashton, MS, LAT, ATC as Athletic Trainer (AT) director to the BOC Board of Directors. Ashton will take office in 2023, following a year of mentorship and learning as an AT director-appointee.

Ashton serves as concussion program coordinator – clinical assistant at Twin Cities Orthopedics in Edina, Minn. His current professional role allows him to collaborate with ATs across a variety of settings, including secondary and collegiate athletics, physician clinics and community outreach. He currently serves on the BOC Professional Practice and Discipline Committee. In addition, Ashton was vice president of the Minnesota Athletic Trainers Association (MATA) for four years, as well as serving as chair of the MATA’s Continuing Education Committee and a member on the Committee on Practice Advancement. Ashton works with the Sports Medicine Fellowship within the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota and serves on its Clinical Competency Committee.

“I am excited to join the BOC board and look forward to working collaboratively with my fellow members,” said Ashton. “I know we will work diligently towards the continued advancement of the athletic training profession through policy development addressing the needs of ATs, as well as the public. I will use my experience as chair of the MATA Continuing Education Committee to help guide the evolution of both entry-level and annual maintenance of the ATC® credential, including future initiatives towards AT specialties. As medical providers, ATs are lifelong learners, and we must continue to grow as professionals. ATs have the ability to offer improved access, while providing quality care. I feel these next several years are important as the BOC works to evolve initial credentialing, continuing education standards and development of specialty credentialing programs to keep pace with the advancement of athletic training education and clinical skills development, all while ensuring public trust. The BOC always ensures that standards are set which ensure public protection and enable ATs to practice at the top of their license.”

Ashton was appointed by the BOC Board of Directors following a nomination process guided by the Nominating Committee.

“We are thrilled to announce this selection to the BOC board,” said Anne Minton, MBA, chief executive officer of the BOC. “Our new AT director brings a wealth of insight from a wide range of practice settings and an expertise in credentialing and continuing education standards, as well as AT specialties. As we move forward Chris will bring an added proficiency and passion to our work in advancing the role of ATs within the health care continuum. The BOC board would like to extend a special thank you to the Nominating Committee for their hard work, and especially to the many qualified and talented applicants we received for this position.”
