The BOC continues to further strengthen and elevate the level of continuing education (CE) offered to Athletic Trainers (ATs). The Standards Committee has determined that BOC Approved Providers will be incorporating evidence-based practice (EBP) principles into all Category A programs with the implementation of approved standards. As such, BOC Approved Providers will be meeting the charge of offering quality CE based on evidence. The BOC Approved Provider standards will continue to evolve ensuring evidence-based practice principles and best practices are always included. As a result, the BOC Standards Committee has recommended that the EBP Category requirements be discontinued starting with the 2022-2023 recertification period.

What Does This Mean for You?

Starting with the 2022-2023 recertification period, principles of EBP will have been incorporated into all Category A programs increasing the caliber of curriculum overall. The EBP Category requirements will be discontinued after the current reporting period ends on Dec. 31, 2021.

BOC Approved Providers will continue to offer EBP approved programming through 2021 as ATs need to fulfill their EBP recertification requirements as follows:

  • ATs certified in 2019 or before must complete 50 continuing education units (CEUs), which must include at least 10 EBP CEUs by December 31, 2021.
  • ATs certified in 2020 must complete 25 CEUs, which must include at least 5 EBP CEUs by December 31, 2021.

Please note that ATs who to not complete the 2020-2021 recertification requirements by the Dec. 31, 2021 deadline will be still be required to complete their EBP requirement in order to reactivate or reinstate.

We will continue to update you as to how this change impacts the specific certification maintenance requirements for the 2022-2023 reporting period. Our goal is to provide you with timely information around this future change so that you are prepared to maintain your certification during the 2022-2023 reporting period.

It is important to remember EBP requirements for the current 2020-2021 recertification period have NOT changed! If you have questions, please reach out to the credentialing team at CE@bocatc.org.
