Board of Certification Announces Specialty Council

The Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC) is pleased to announce the formation of a new Specialty Council to oversee the credentialing of Athletic Trainers (ATs) who have demonstrated advanced knowledge, skills and abilities in the respective areas of specialization. The Specialty Council is comprised of five members, including at least three board-certified specialist members, and one public member.

Specialty Council members include:

  • Mike Hudson, PhD, LAT, ATC – AT Member and Council Chair – Springfield, MO; Professor of Sports Medicine and Athletic Training at Missouri State University
  • Allen Hardin, ATC, PT, MSPT, SCS, BCS-O, CSCS – Board Certified Specialist Member – Austin, TX; Chief Medical Officer at the University of Texas at Austin Department of Intercollegiate Athletics
  • Tara McConohy, MS, LAT, ATC, OTC, BCS-O – Board Certified Specialist Member – Menomonie, WI; Athletic Trainer with Ochsner Health System
  • JJ Wetherington, MS, LAT, ATC, BCS-O – Board Certified Specialist Member – Boise, ID; Clinical Athletic Trainer with St. Luke’s Health System
  • James Kinderknecht, MD – Public Member – Chapel Hill, NC; Retired Physician at the Hospital for Special Surgery

In addition to overseeing athletic training specialty certifications, the Specialty Council is responsible for working with strategic partners to determine the value and impact of specialties and specialty certifications. The Council will be responsible for oversight of all specialty certification activities including policies and procedures on eligibility standards; standards for initial and maintaining certification; disciplinary determination; exam development, administration and scoring, and the selection of subject matter experts.

Specialty Council members were selected based on their experience or knowledge with oversight boards within and/or outside the profession of orthopedics and/or athletic training. The selected members also demonstrated aptitude for serving the orthopedic specialist community, building strong relationships and engaging in opportunities to gain valuable leadership experience.
