Why is volunteering for the BOC important to you?
Early in my career, a seasoned AT shared with me that he approaches challenges with the mindset of “I have no right to complain unless I am actively trying to be a part of the solution.” This resonated with me, and I have since applied a similar mindset to my personal approach. This led me to volunteer for the BOC where I have gained an appreciation for all the BOC does for the profession of athletic training. Volunteering for the BOC is important to me because it allows for me to be a part of the growing and changing landscape of the profession.
What is the best or most rewarding part about volunteering with the BOC?
One of the most rewarding parts about volunteering with the BOC is the relationships and friendships that have developed over time with colleagues who I would have never met without volunteering.
How did you first come to know about a BOC volunteer opportunity?
I first became aware about BOC volunteer opportunities when a colleague of mine asked if I would be interested in being a part of the BOC Cut Score/Standard Setting Committee. He was asked to provide a recommendation because he no longer qualified. I was interested, applied, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This was the first time I saw the direct impact on the profession volunteers can have. From there, I continually looked for opportunities to help support and improve the profession as a volunteer.
What advice would you give to an AT looking to get involved as a BOC volunteer?
Don’t be intimidated! If you are looking to get involved with the BOC as a volunteer, reach out to the BOC staff or a current volunteer (I’m happy to answer any questions!) and they can help guide and make connections to potential opportunities.
How has your experience volunteering at the BOC influenced you?
My experience volunteering at the BOC has impacted me by the lifelong friendships that have developed as well as improved my understanding and I have a greater appreciation for what the BOC does for athletic trainers and the profession as a whole.
