Course Offering Gap Series: Identifying Where CE Development Opportunities Exist

As we continue enhancing the BOC Activity Directory, we’re taking a closer look at continuing education (CE) trends to better understand where programming is plentiful and where opportunities exist to expand the range of topics available to Athletic Trainers (ATs).
Some topic areas currently have fewer CE offerings than others. These areas represent opportunities for BOC Approved Providers to develop timely, relevant programming that addresses the evolving needs of ATs across diverse practice settings. The following topics highlight areas where additional CE programming could help broaden learning opportunities and strengthen the overall CE landscape.
Underrepresented Topic Areas
Dermatologic Conditions and Darker Skin Tones
Dermatologic conditions can present differently across skin tones, which may create challenges in recognition and assessment. Educational offerings could explore common conditions, differences in presentation, assessment and documentation, referral considerations and culturally responsive care.
Naloxone Rescue Use
ATs may be among the first health care professionals to respond to an opioid overdose. Educational offerings could address recognition of opioid toxicity, naloxone administration, rescue breathing, repeat dosing, emergency response and post-administration monitoring.
Lightning Safety
Lightning presents a significant risk during outdoor activities/events and requires timely decision-making. Educational offerings could address risk assessment, weather monitoring, evacuation and shelter protocols, emergency response, return-to-play decisions and prevention strategies.
Social Determinants of Health
Social and environmental factors can significantly influence health outcomes and access to care. Educational offerings could explore factors such as housing, food access, transportation and health care access, along with strategies for identifying barriers and connecting patients with appropriate resources.
Emergency Response: Sports Equipment Removal
Rapid removal of sports equipment may be necessary during certain medical emergencies. Educational offerings could address indications for equipment removal, emergency removal techniques, airway and spinal considerations, coordination among responders and decision-making across different sports and emergency scenarios.
Turning Opportunities into Impact
Course gap data offers another perspective for BOC Approved Providers to consider when evaluating their CE portfolios. Compare these findings with your own program gap data to identify areas of overlap and opportunities to expand existing offerings or develop new activities. Participant feedback can provide additional insight into learner needs and help inform future CE.
These insights can help you identify opportunities to build on activities you already offer. Take a fresh look at the BOC Activity Directory, review your current activity portfolio, and explore trends in the course gap series. You may find opportunities to build on your existing expertise or develop new activities in areas where additional education is needed.
By continuing to expand the breadth and relevance of CE offerings, BOC Approved Providers can help create a stronger, more diverse CE ecosystem that supports lifelong learning and excellence across the athletic training profession.
