In-Depth: Athletic Trainer and Owner of Sports Medicine Clinic
Jaimie Doherty, MSEd, ATC is the founder and owner of Empowering Athletes, a sport medicine athletic training clinic that supports individual athletes in the performing arts, gymnastics and a variety of other sports. She has been a Certified Athletic Trainer (AT) for more than 10 years.
Describe your setting:
I own an athletic training clinic. Seventy percent of my clients are in the performing arts or gymnastics, while the remainder are typical sport athletes.
Describe your typical day:
I usually get into the office about one to one and a half hours before my first client to do administrative work. Following, I normally have one-on-one sessions from noon until 8 p.m. I work with adults and children on injury prevention, injury rehabilitation and strength and conditioning. In addition, I offer a 90 minutes strength and conditioning class Monday through Thursday each week.
What do you like about your position?
I absolutely love my job. It is so rewarding to see my athletes return to play or perform, and stay with me through ongoing conditioning once they are pain free. For many of my performing arts clients and gymnasts I work with the schools they train at, so I get to see them in class and at performances, as well.
What is your greatest achievement as an Athletic Trainer?
Opening Empowering Athletes. This was a dream of mine for quite a while!
What advice do you have about your practice setting for a young AT looking at this setting?
Make all the connection you can with local sports teams and high schools. Providing injury prevention talks with teams is a great way to build connections.
